Yukon River Family Voyageur Canoe Trip > Detailed Itinerary

The 28-foot Voyageur canoe, with its large capacity for gear and clients along with its stability and speed is a perfect craft for families and people of varying paddling ability. Young children can paddle when they have the energy, but likewise fall asleep when they are tired. The larger canoes are all-but-impossible to flip on waters such as those found on the Yukon River so they are very safe. This trip requires a minimum of three adults plus a guide and can accommodate as many as six participants and a guide. Younger children are welcome as well as the elderly. The Voyageur canoe gets us all to camp in style, and the Yukon River with its absence of whitewater and large open gravel bars for camping is the perfect canoe trip for families that want a low-stress wilderness vacation.

This 8-day voyage takes participants on a trip as much through time, as through the wilderness. The Yukon River embodies the history of the Yukon. It has served as the main transportation corridor of the Yukon and Alaska for both First Nations and early gold-seekers and settlers as well. As you travel the Yukon River you will gain an understanding of the Yukon’s rich frontier history from the gold Rush of 1898 through the paddle wheeler era. Many artifacts remain along the riverbanks for canoeist to experience first hand.

Note: All meals included in this itinerary are listed as: ( B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner )

Day 0: WHITEHORSE, YUKON

Hopefully you enjoyed your travels and have arrived safely in Whitehorse, the Yukon’s capital city, nestled among the wilderness.

Please arrive in Whitehorse in time for an orientation meeting at 8:30 pm the night before our departure. Guests are responsible for accommodation and meals while in Whitehorse. Whitehorse is a splendid little city and we recommend booking some additional time at either the beginning or the end of your trip to see Whitehorse.  If you wish to fish on your trip but, have not had a chance to purchase a Yukon fishing license, you should do so this evening.  Your guides will let you know where they can be purchased.

Please Note:  Often our guests choose to come to the Yukon several days early, or to depart several days after their wilderness vacation.  Therefore we don't include accommodation in Whitehorse in order to provide flexibility for our guests. If you prefer, we can easily arrange your hotel accommodations in Whitehorse and add these details to your itinerary.

Day 1: ( L, D)

Cabin Fever Adventures staff will meet you at your hotels starting at 7:00 am. Please finish your breakfast (not included) by this time. We will answer any final questions and depart Whitehorse by 8:00 am, heading north on the Klondike Highway for 40 minutes until we reach the Lake Labarge campground. From here we will paddle north on the waters made famous by Robert Service’s Poem, “The Cremation of Sam McGee”. That night we will camp on the peaceful shore of this huge 30-mile-long lake and await a sunset that may never come in this land of the midnight sun!

Day 2-7: (B, L, D)

Over the next six days we will travel north on the Yukon River, as it grows in size, gathering other rivers and streams, we will pass derelict steamers, abandoned villages and other gold-rush-era artifacts along the way. There will be lots of time to relax in camp, and if we make good distance we may have time for a layover day to relax in the same camp for two nights. There is lots of fishing opportunities along the way, so don’t forget to buy a Yukon fishing license.

Day 8: (B, L )

Today we will paddle our final section of the Yukon River into the town of Carmacks, named after George Carmacks, one of the original discoverers of the Klondike Gold Rush. Here we will rendezvous with Cabin Fever Adventures Staff and be shuttled back to Whitehorse for a 6:00 pm arrival. Dinner and hotel not included

Please Note:  This trip can be shortened to half its river length, allowing for either a shorter trip in regards to time or increased leisure time at our wilderness camps. ( A good option for families with small children)
